4 Units of  “WOTA BOX” and 12 Units of  “WOSH” Introduced in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture

—Strengthening Disaster Preparedness for Securing Daily Water Supply Based on the Experience ofthe Prolonged Water Outage Caused by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake—

Drawing on the experience of the prolonged water outages experienced following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, Nanao City in Ishikawa Prefecture has introduced four units of the portable water-regeneration system “WOTA BOX” and twelve units of the water-regeneration handwashing stand “WOSH” as part of its disaster-preparedness measures to secure water for daily living.

Nanao City suffered extensive damage as a result of the earthquake that struck on January 1, 2024. In particular, damage to water and sewerage infrastructure took significant time to restore, leading to prolonged water outages. As a result, securing water for essential daily needs—such as toilet use, bathing, and laundry—became a serious challenge for residents.

This deployment was made possible through the Cabinet Office’s “New Regional Economy and Living Environment Revitalization Grant,” under the framework of “Emergency Regional Disaster Prevention Infrastructure Development.” By deploying “WOTA BOX” and “WOSH” at 12 evacuation centers that experienced prolonged water outages, the city aims to strengthen its disaster-response water infrastructure through the use of decentralized water recycling systems.

On February 24, 2026, a hands-on training session on installation and operation was conducted for Nanao City staff members who will be responsible for  operating the systems.
