Two Years Since the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake

Two years have passed since the Noto Peninsula Earthquake struck on January 1, 2024.
WOTA once again extends its heartfelt sympathies to all those affected and expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

In response to the earthquake, WOTA deployed 100 units of the portable water-regeneration system “WOTA BOX” and 207 units of the water-regeneration handwashing stand “WOSH.” These systems supported 89% of evacuation centers that experienced prolonged water outages, as well as 68 medical and welfare facilities, helping to secure essential domestic water and maintain hygienic conditions.

At the same time, the disaster revealed a significant challenge: in some cases, it took up to one and a half months from consolidating the equipment to on-site deployment. Based on this lesson, WOTA has been progressively entering into disaster response agreements with all 47 prefectures across Japan to establish a mutual support framework for essential domestic water equipment in times of disaster. These agreements are part of the effort to realize an “inter-municipal wide-area mutual aid platform for water regeneration systems.”

Following the conclusion of disaster response agreements with prefectures across Japan’s seven regional blocks* and with DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Teams), WOTA formally launched “JWAD (Japan Water Association for Disaster)” on December 4, 2025.

Moving forward, WOTA will continue its ongoing activities in the Noto Peninsula region, staying close to local communities to build sustainable water infrastructure. WOTA will accelerate the deployment of small-scale decentralized water-regeneration systems and further promote nationwide expansion of the inter-municipal wide-area mutual aid platform through agreements with prefectures and related organizations.

Not only national-crisis–level-scale disasters, but also large-scale disasters that may occur anytime and anywhere, WOTA is committed to building a system capable of responding swiftly and flexibly.

*Japan’s seven regional blocks refer to the seven governors’ associations defined by the National Governors’ Association of Japan: Hokkaido-Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu. WOTA has concluded agreements with at least one prefecture in each regional block.

[About WOTA Corp.]
WOTA is a private company aiming to provide structural solutions to water-related problems.
Since our founding in 2014, to address issues arising from the uneven distribution, depletion, and pollution of the planet’s water resources, WOTA has been developing “small-scale decentralized water-regeneration systems,” which regenerate and maximize the use of domestic wastewater, and the “autonomous water-treatment control technologies” that enable them. WOTA has already launched two products, contributing to emergency water use during water outages in disasters and to improvements in public health. WOTA has also developed a “household water-regeneration system” that enables everyday water use, and has begun water supply services in select areas both in Japan and overseas.
