WOTA Releases Documentary Video on Support Efforts for the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake

NEWS

We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake which struck on January 1, 2024, at 16:10 JST.

Immediately after the earthquake, WOTA began coordinating with the Ishikawa Prefectural Government and other relevant organizations, launching support activities on January 4. Our efforts included:

– Bathing support using the WOTA BOX, a small-scale decentralized water recycling system that functions even during water outages.
– Handwashing support via WOSH, a self-contained water recycling handwashing station.

At the time of the disaster, there were no WOTA systems in the Noto Peninsula. However, with the support of The Nippon Foundation and other partner organizations, along with municipalities, private companies, and individuals nationwide, we were able to deploy WOTA BOX and WOSH units to:

– 89% of long-term water outage evacuation centers
– 68 medical and welfare facilities

This deployment was achieved within approximately two weeks after the earthquake. Additionally, we provided training to evacuees on how to operate the systems themselves, allowing for sustained use while WOTA continued its support activities for a full year.

Reflecting on this year of relief efforts and to emphasize the critical need for preparedness against future large-scale disasters, WOTA has released a documentary video capturing:

– The realities of the disaster-affected areas
– First-hand accounts from survivors and those involved in the relief efforts

This video aims to shed light on the lessons learned and the importance of disaster resilience for the future.
